The Ethics of "Street" photography

The Faces of Strangers
I have been considering posting some of my Street photography from my passed travels but I am conflicted on the ethics of posting pictures in which the subjects were not aware of being photographed or if they were aware they had no idea that their likeness would find its way to a public internet site. This feeling was reinforced by the refusal of one of those subjects to give her permission to have her photograph posted. The truth is that her case was unusual in that I had inadvertently taken a picture of an important person who was in Rome on business that was not in the public realm and posting her image could have been awkward for her. In this case a fellow deviant who lived in Rome made contact with the Lady for me so again its not a typical case.
I am aware that, at least until recently, images captured in public are, well, public so there is no legal reason not to post such images. That said I have still struggled with the question of whether or not to post images of individuals who have not expressly given their permission for me to do so.
I have read most if not all that has been presented on dA on the subject but still to or not to follow a course of action is an individual decision. The conclusion that I have come to is that if one is in public then one is pretty much fair game.

"Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most:
that people are basically good;
that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything;
that power and money, money and power mean nothing;
that good always triumphs over evil;
that love, true love, never dies...
No matter if they're true or not, a man should believe in those things because those are the things worth believing in."

Miracles happen every second of our lives. You just have to be aware enough to see them.
true love between a husband and wife comes from dedication and loyalty of heart, created from their innermost beings.

A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.

We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives.
