The original image was way over exposed because I had been shooting in manual mode in an attempt to catch birds in flight against a thin overcast sky when this guy landed and the light suddenly brightened.
I don’t know what species of hawk this is but I have seen them in the area.
Edit:
Thanks to Cy (cycoze [link]) I think that I can say with some confidence that this is a juvenile Sharp-Shinned Hawk [link] If you like great bird shots give Cy a visit.

A note on the image; this is the third update of this image that I have posted. Since I had horribly overexposed the shot I had to really work with the image to bring it to the point that I was willing to share it here. I processed the RAW image in Canon’s Digital Photo Professional with no sharpening creating three versions;
1. As shot
2 One full stop darker
3 one & a half stops darker.
I then used Dynamic-Photo HDR [link] to combine the three images which in this case produced an acceptable end result.
I should mention here that it was my friend Len (AKA pagan-live-style [link]) who introduced me to Dynamic-Photo HDR. Len is an interesting guy with a lovely and diverse gallery which I strongly suggest to all.
